The most auspicious Month of Margasirsha or Margazhi

During this month, Sri Vaishnavas and devotees of the Lord observe special spiritual practices. The month of Margasirsha (also known as Margazhi in Tamil) holds a very special place in Vaishnava tradition.

In the Bhagavad-gita (10.35), Lord Krishna Himself declares: 'Of months I am Margasirsha (November-December).' This makes it the most auspicious month of the year for devotional practices.

During this month, Andal (Godadevi Devi Dasi), one of the twelve Alvars and the only female among them, composed the Thiruppavai — 30 beautiful verses glorifying Lord Vishnu. Devotees recite these verses daily throughout the month.

Special practices during Margasirsha include: waking up before sunrise for mangala-arati, offering special prayers and bhajans, observing fasting on Ekadasi days with extra devotion, and reading the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam.

Let us take advantage of this most auspicious month and intensify our devotional practices to please the Lord and make rapid advancement on the path of bhakti.
