What should devotees do during eclipse?

Upon the request from some devotees, I am sharing the Vedic and Vaishnava guidelines for observing an eclipse.

According to Vedic tradition, an eclipse (both solar and lunar) is considered a highly auspicious time for spiritual practices. The Srimad Bhagavatam describes that during an eclipse, the influence of Rahu causes a temporary disruption in the cosmic order, making it an especially powerful time for spiritual activities.

Recommended practices during an eclipse: (1) Chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra continuously throughout the eclipse. (2) Take a bath before and after the eclipse if possible. (3) Avoid eating food during the eclipse period. (4) Place tulasi leaves in all food and water to purify them. (5) Engage in reading scriptures, especially the Srimad Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita. (6) Offer special prayers to the Lord.

The Srimad Bhagavatam (10.82.7) mentions that during a solar eclipse at Kurukshetra, all the great sages, kings, and devotees gathered to bathe in the sacred lake and chant the glories of the Lord. This shows the importance of utilizing eclipse time for spiritual advancement.

The spiritual merit accumulated during an eclipse is said to be many times more than that accumulated during normal times. So let us take full advantage of these auspicious moments by intensifying our devotional practices.
